Former President Trump Backs John James in Michigan Governor’s Primary Race

In a notable shift within Michigan's political sphere, John James, a Congressman and businessman, has received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump as he vies for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. Trump's support, which he shared in a post on Truth Social, highlights James' credentials, referring to him as a “West Point Graduate, Combat Pilot, Brave Iraq War Veteran, Successful Businessman and Job Creator, and now, as a Highly Respected U.S. Congressman.”

Expressing his appreciation on X, James hailed Trump as “the greatest President of my lifetime,” indicating the significant importance of this endorsement as voters prepare for the approaching primary, with absentee ballots set to be released shortly.

The Republican primary race is highly competitive, with James encountering formidable challengers such as businessman Perry Johnson, former Attorney General Mike Cox, and state senator Aric Nesbitt. Trump's endorsement may serve as a pivotal factor within the GOP primary, yet it raises questions regarding its potential implications for a broader election campaign.

Recent polling data from Real Clear Politics reveals that Trump's approval rating is approximately 40%, while disapproval stands at 57%. This dichotomy could influence how his backing is perceived by general election voters.

Responses to the endorsement have varied among James' opponents. Perry Johnson criticized Trump’s choice, suggesting that the former president received “bad advice” and noted previous defeats faced by Trump-endorsed candidates in Michigan. Johnson's campaign remarked, “Across the country, Republican voters are proving that an endorsement alone does not decide a governor’s race,” emphasizing a trend seen in other states where voters prioritized their preferred candidates over endorsements.

Mike Cox, another candidate, displayed confidence amidst the endorsement, stating, “I look forward to being President Trump’s favorite governor when I win,” indicating his intention to leverage his own campaign strategy in the face of Trump's support for James.

On the other side of the political spectrum, Democrats quickly criticized the endorsement. The Democratic Governors Association suggested Trump's involvement signifies a downturn in James' campaign, claiming that he is now relying on external help to revitalize his position. They stated, “After voting for Donald Trump’s disastrous and unpopular agenda of raising the cost of groceries and gas and cutting health care, John James is now counting on help from DC to bail out his struggling campaign.”

Additionally, Jocelyn Benson, the Michigan Secretary of State and a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, pointed out, “While families are struggling with the rising cost of everything – groceries, gas, prescription drugs – James has spent the last year focused on one thing: winning Donald Trump’s approval.”
