UAW Endorses Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan's Senate Primary
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has officially endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat from Michigan. This endorsement marks a pivotal moment given the UAW's substantial role and influence within Michigan's Democratic framework, bolstered by its large membership base of both active and retired union workers.
El-Sayed conveyed his commitment to fighting against corporate interests and strengthening Michigan’s workforce. In his announcement, he stated, “Together, we’re going to take on corporate greed, rebuild an economy that works for working people, strengthen collective bargaining, and ensure that the future of Michigan manufacturing is built right here by union workers. Solidarity forever.”
The UAW's backing stems from El-Sayed's alignment with several progressive policies, including advocating for a single-payer health care system, opposing stock buybacks, and rejecting contributions from corporate political action committees. This endorsement underscores a potential shift toward more progressive values within the party.
While other candidates in the race, such as U.S. Representative Haley Stevens and state Senator Mallory McMorrow, are also vying for UAW support, political analysts highlight the significance of the union's endorsement of El-Sayed. David Dulio, a political science professor at Oakland University, noted, “The UAW is a behemoth in the labor world. Everybody takes notice of what the UAW does in their endorsements and how they get involved in politics.”
This endorsement comes at a crucial time, as the race tightens among the three Democratic contenders. Although not all union members may vote in line with the endorsement, it reflects a growing strength among progressive Democratic activists, marking a noteworthy trend in the current political climate.
In addition to influencing the Senate race, the UAW plays an important role in various sectors, including governmental roles, academia, and casinos, showcasing the union's broadening priorities. Meanwhile, candidate Stevens is emphasizing her background in manufacturing, citing her involvement with President Barack Obama’s rescue of the auto industry. Her spokesperson, Joetta Appiah, remarked, “Haley Stevens has spent her career fighting for Michigan manufacturing, our auto industry, and the workers who keep our economy moving.”
Senator McMorrow is also highlighting her strong union relationships, with spokesperson Jackson Boaz asserting, “Mallory has always stood with working Michiganders. She’s grateful to have earned the support of multiple national unions – and we will continue to make the case to every Michigander about why Mallory is the only candidate who can win the primary, unite the party, and defeat Mike Rogers in November.”
On the Republican side, former U.S. Representative Mike Rogers is running unopposed for the Senate nomination. Additionally, the UAW has endorsed Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, positioning her favorably against Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. The union has opted not to endorse any candidates in the Republican primaries.
