Rick Bennett's Independent Governor Bid Gains Support from Republican Figures

State Senator Rick Bennett is currently running as an independent candidate for the governor of Maine, a decision that has attracted significant backing from prominent Republican donors and strategists, including supporters of former Governor Paul LePage.

Maine's political landscape has a history of electing independent candidates to high offices. Notables like Angus King, who served as governor and is now a U.S. Senator, and Eliot Cutler, a close runner-up in the 2010 gubernatorial election, illustrate this tradition.

Bennett's campaign is somewhat unconventional for an independent, as he previously held a significant position within the Maine Republican Party, serving as vice chair from 2013 to 2017 before transitioning to an independent campaign last year.

In a recent campaign video, Bennett stated, “We need leaders who will work with anyone—Republican, Democrat, or independent—to ease the financial pressure on families. That’s why I’m running as an independent.” This highlights his intent to appeal to a broad voter base beyond just traditional party lines.

Financial disclosures indicate that the super PAC Maine Wins Together, which is a major supporter of Bennett, largely comprises donations from wealthy Republican contributors. For instance, auto-racing magnates Gray and Sandra Bahre recently donated $50,000 to this PAC. Their financial support extends to previous contributions for LePage's congressional efforts as well as numerous donations to other Republican entities, totaling approximately $49,000.

Another significant donor, liquor executive Paul Coulombe, also gave $50,000 to Maine Wins Together. Coulombe's financial history includes a $160,000 donation to the Maine Republican Party in 2014 and backing for LePage during his 2022 gubernatorial campaign.

Former Governor Paul LePage, who governed Maine from 2011 to 2019, has drawn attention for his controversial tenure, which he characterized by saying he was “Donald Trump before Donald Trump.” His administration faced backlash for various provocative statements and policies, including a refusal to expand Medicaid despite a clear voter mandate.

Bennett's connections to LePage are notable; he campaigned with him during the 2010 gubernatorial campaign and was active on LePage's transition team. Additionally, LePage sought to recommend Bennett for a role in the Trump administration during Trump's presidency.

Campaign finance data reveals that Bennett's strategic direction is managed by Election Hive, a Republican consulting firm based in Utah, which has previously worked with conservative figures like Senator Mike Lee.

In this gubernatorial race, Bennett will compete against Democrat Hannah Pingree and Republican Bobby Charles. Recent polling data from the Siena Research Institute indicates Bennett’s current standing at only 8% support, trailing behind both of his opponents.
