Michigan Senate Race Centers on Gordie Howe Bridge Delay

The delay of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a critical link between Michigan and Canada, has emerged as a significant issue in the ongoing Michigan Senate race. Democratic candidate Mallory McMorrow is making headlines by directly tying this infrastructure stalemate to former President Donald Trump, alleging that his actions have hindered the bridge's opening.

In a recent campaign advertisement, McMorrow claims that, “Donald Trump won’t open it,” suggesting that contributions made to Trump by Matthew Moroun—a major supporter and owner of the Ambassador Bridge—are influencing the situation. Public records confirm that Moroun donated $1 million to Trump's super PAC earlier this year.

The Gordie Howe Bridge was initially set to open on June 12, but its inauguration has been postponed due to lingering issues between U.S. and Canadian authorities. This situation has raised economic concerns for both nations, positioning it as a critical talking point for McMorrow in her bid against former state Rep. Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic primary. This strategy marks McMorrow as the first among her peers to elevate the bridge's significance in her campaign narrative.

Political Implications of Trump's Demands

Trump's past declarations regarding the bridge have further complicated matters. In February, he asserted that Canada should transfer at least half of the bridge's ownership to the U.S., among other demands, as part of his broader trade negotiations with Canada. The construction of this bridge, which has been in development since 2018 and carries an estimated cost of $4.4 billion, was a project initiated under the administration of former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

The bridge, named after NHL Hall of Famer Gordie Howe, is expected to significantly enhance commerce between the two countries. However, as the Senate race unfolds, the delay offers McMorrow an opportunity to underscore the tangible effects of political decisions on local economies.

Advertising Strategies Heat Up Ahead of Primaries

McMorrow's advertisement, which is part of a broader campaign strategy, follows an investment of over $400,000 directed towards media spots in the Detroit area. As the primary season heats up, she positions herself as a competitive candidate, especially as the race narrows down. Meanwhile, her rivals, Stevens and El-Sayed, are bolstered by substantial financial contributions and endorsements.

With the primary election approaching and outside groups ramping up advertising efforts, both Stevens and McMorrow are receiving significant support from political action committees. El-Sayed has also begun his own promotional campaign, ensuring that all candidates remain actively in contention as election day nears.

As McMorrow navigates this pivotal moment in her campaign, she expresses confidence in her ability to resonate with voters, stating, “There are so many people who are just starting to tune into this race.”
