Controversies Resurface for Bobby Charles in Maine Governor Race As the race for the governorship of Maine heats up, the focus has shifted to Republican candidate Bobby Charles, whose past associations are garnering renewed attention. His ties to controversial political figures, particularly Dennis Hastert and Mark Foley, have come under scrutiny, raising questions about their impact on his campaign. A recent opinion article by Anita Charles, Bobby’s sister, published in the Portland Press Herald, criticized his relationship with Hastert and endorsed his opponent, Hannah Pingree, a Democrat. She remarked on how the connection with Hastert benefited her brother’s career, despite the latter facing serious allegations of child abuse. Anita pointed out, “Bobby was a close friend and colleague of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert from 1995 to 1999,” and highlighted that Bobby has yet to sever ties or publicly condemn Hastert’s actions. In addition, past defenses of Hastert by Charles have resurfaced, including an op-ed in which he supported Hastert during the scandal involving Mark Foley. Foley was forced to resign in 2006 after inappropriate communications with underage pages became public. During the late 1990s, Charles was a congressional staffer when Hastert served as Deputy Whip, creating a long-standing professional relationship. Charles later became the Assistant Secretary of State, coinciding with Hastert's role as House Speaker. Foley joined Congress in 1994, which placed their careers in overlapping timelines. In the aftermath of Foley's resignation, the House Ethics Committee found evidence that Hastert's staff had prior knowledge of Foley’s misconduct, yet no action was taken until public pressure mounted. Ohio Representative John Boehner confirmed that he had informed Hastert of the situation, but it did not lead to immediate intervention. Amidst increasing pressure for Hastert to resign, Charles defended him in a Washington Times op-ed, praising Hastert’s commitment to education and community service. He wrote, “His wife is a teacher, his brother is a teacher and he has devoted more time to saving kids and families from the scourge of illegal drugs than any member of Congress.” In light of recent critiques, Charles held a press conference where he categorically denied knowledge of Hastert's misdeeds, labeling child sex offenses as “monstrous.” He stated, “I think people against whom these charges are proven need to go to prison and stay there forever.” A spokesperson for his campaign reiterated Charles's condemnation of child abuse, but did not address the specifics of the Foley case or his prior opinions regarding Hastert.
