Local Food Pantries See Increased Demand During Federal Shutdown The ongoing federal government shutdown has led to a significant rise in the number of families seeking assistance from food pantries in local communities. In Flagstaff, Arizona, the Flagstaff Family Food Center is witnessing a dramatic influx of families needing support, as delays in federal food assistance payments strain resources. At the Flagstaff Family Food Center, the scene outside the distribution warehouse has become increasingly busy, with cars lined up as staff and volunteers work diligently to provide essential groceries. The center has reported a 30% increase in demand recently, and officials anticipate this trend may continue as the shutdown extends. Distribution Manager Chris Smiley remarked on the situation, stating, “We’re expecting the need to just keep going up and up and up. On Tuesday, we broke our record for families served at our distributions. And then Wednesday, we broke the Tuesday record. And then on Thursday, we almost matched it.” This continual rise in demand indicates the growing reliance on community support during this challenging period. Staff and volunteers prepare food boxes for distribution on East Huntington Drive. Vice President Ceara Chirovsky highlighted the center's commitment to the community, affirming, “The food is here. You do not have to go hungry, you can come to us and we will give you food to put on the table for yourself and your family and it is high quality and it is nutritious.” This reassurance comes as the community navigates the uncertainties posed by the federal shutdown. The implications of the shutdown extend to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which faces potential disruptions. Although a federal judge has mandated ongoing funding for the food stamp program, concerns persist regarding delays in reloading SNAP benefits to cards, with some families facing waits of several weeks.
