Flagstaff Implements New Guidelines Amid ICE Interest in Local Property
The city of Flagstaff is currently navigating the complexities surrounding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is interested in establishing a presence in the area. Although local law enforcement agencies, including the Flagstaff Police Department and Coconino County Sheriff's Office, have acknowledged ICE's interest, they emphasize that no official requests have been submitted for the use of city-owned properties.
In response to this potential federal activity, Flagstaff has rolled out new procedures that mandate explicit consent from the city manager before any municipal installations can be utilized by immigration authorities for operational activities such as bases, staging areas, or processing locations. These protocols, which were implemented earlier this month, aim to ensure that any federal operations align with the city's goals and do not disrupt local functions or jeopardize public safety.
Both the sheriff's office and Flagstaff police have reiterated their stance on immigration enforcement, stating their commitment to not enforcing federal immigration laws. They have also assured residents that officers will clearly identify themselves while on duty, maintaining transparency within the community.
To further promote accountability and openness, the City of Flagstaff has introduced an online portal where residents can report any interactions with ICE agents. This move is part of an overarching strategy to enhance transparency regarding the use of city properties by federal agencies.
