Pennsylvania residents are increasingly feeling the pinch of rising costs associated with health care, groceries, and energy, attributed to economic policies executed during the Trump administration. A recent report from Defend America Action outlines how these policies have exacerbated a growing affordability crisis in the state. The publication, referenced by the Pennsylvania Independent, criticizes the impacts of Trump’s economic strategies, particularly the failure to renew tax credits linked to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the imposition of tariffs. These factors have contributed to surging health insurance premiums and grocery prices. The report has received support from Democratic legislators, including Representatives Tina Davis and Mike Schlossberg, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction among citizens. Report Findings and Criticism The report, titled “Affordability Crisis,” observes that “Trump and Republicans are dismantling economic security, harming working families for the benefit of the wealthy.” It calls for state officials to take action against these detrimental policies, which are seen as threatening the economic stability of Pennsylvania. Impact of Policies on Health Care Representative Arvind Venkat, who serves the Pittsburgh region, points to significant issues stemming from the lack of renewed ACA tax credits and tariffs that drive up product prices. He remarked, “Our affordability crisis stems from lapsing ACA tax credits, unilateral tariffs, and reduced food and Medicaid aid.” This sentiment reflects broader concerns over the allocation of federal resources, with criticisms directed at Trump’s focus on tax reductions for the wealthy. The ACA tax credits, originally bolstered during the COVID-19 pandemic through initiatives like the American Rescue Plan, are nearing expiration. As these expire, Democrats are advocating for their renewal, encountering pushback from Republican leaders. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, failure to extend these credits could affect health coverage for 22 million individuals in the U.S., with many residents in Pennsylvania expected to face higher premiums starting in 2026. Price Increases in Groceries and Energy The report also highlights surging prices for groceries and energy. Findings from a Washington Post-Ipsos poll indicate that a significant 71% of Americans are experiencing increased grocery expenses. Over the past year, there has been a 2.7% rise in grocery prices, which has been linked to the imposition of tariffs during Trump's presidency. Although Trump has recently exempted some food items from tariffs following setbacks in Republican elections, rising energy costs remain a persistent issue. Data suggests that Pennsylvania residents are facing approximately $170 more in electricity bills this year. Economic Outlook for Pennsylvanians Recent polling conducted by Franklin & Marshall College reveals that 36% of Pennsylvanians feel worse off financially compared to the previous year. The survey underscores significant concerns about economic conditions, affecting Trump’s approval ratings as many voters express discontent with their financial situations and broader economic challenges.
