Mesa's Landmark Development Project Set to Boost Jobs and Local Economy
The Mesa City Council has officially approved a groundbreaking development project, paving the way for an economic transformation in the region. The Legacy Park and Gateway Crossing initiative, carrying an expected investment of around $3 billion, aims to create over 13,500 new jobs and rejuvenate the local economy.
Located strategically to the east of Mesa Gateway Airport, this development is a response to the significant residential growth witnessed in the area over the past decade. Mesa City Manager Scott Butler discussed the project's potential in an interview with KJZZ, emphasizing its ambition to establish the largest mixed-use hospitality and retail complex in the city's history. This complex includes a luxurious 600-room resort hotel, designed to compete with top-tier offerings available in Scottsdale and Phoenix’s Camelback Corridor.
Butler pointed out the project's significance not only for tourism but also for local residents. By introducing high-quality hotels, including two additional mid-tier options, the development aims to accommodate the increasing number of visitors to the Arizona Athletic Grounds. These facilities are expected to enhance the city's ability to attract tourists while also providing local access to retail and dining options.
In light of concerns regarding economic outflow, Butler remarked, “We hear so often from our residents that they have to drive outside the community. For the city, it hurts us in the sense that we lose all of that sales tax that doesn’t stay in our communities and help support our public safety and our parks and our other amenities.” This project is anticipated to help retain local sales tax revenue, which is crucial for maintaining public services.
The alignment of the light and jagged volcanic cliffs from September 15-19 will create a unique shadow resembling a cougar on the Superstition Mountains at sunset between 5:30 and 6 p.m.
Gateway Airport is among the first 13 airports to offer Gateside by TSA Precheck, allowing non-travelers to go through security to enjoy the airport's restaurants and shops or visit friends and family.
