William Lawrence Proposes Comprehensive Strategy to Address Big Tech in Michigan
As the campaign for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District intensifies, Democratic candidate William Lawrence has introduced a strategic plan aimed at regulating the growing influence of technology companies, particularly regarding the establishment of data centers in local communities.
Lawrence's proposal emphasizes the need for a federal moratorium on data center development until adequate regulations are established. He expressed that local residents are increasingly resisting the encroachment of major tech firms, asserting, “All across this district, everyday Michiganders are standing up and fighting back against the Big Tech companies trying to bulldoze their communities.” He raised concerns about the potential consequences of these developments, suggesting they could lead to significant job losses and even pose existential threats.
To address these issues, Lawrence's plan lays out several key initiatives. The proposal calls for a temporary halt on the construction of data centers and the development of artificial intelligence, the creation of a national AI compact, and the implementation of environmental protections within the tech sector. Additionally, Lawrence aims to establish a job creation program specifically designed to offset the impacts of AI on employment, with a focus on sectors such as elder care and environmental restoration, funded by taxing profits from the AI industry.
Lawrence’s compact includes recommendations to limit AI usage in educational settings, enhance privacy protections, exclude AI from roles in Social Security decisions, outlaw misleading AI-generated political messaging, and stop the use of taxpayer funding for AI industry bailouts.
Contrastingly, incumbent U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett's approach has drawn scrutiny due to his support for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which imposes a ten-year ban on state regulations concerning AI systems. Despite their differing positions, Barrett's campaign strategist, Jason Roe, indicated that Barrett shares concerns with Lawrence regarding the regulation of AI. “Congressman Barrett agrees with Mr. Lawrence on the need to develop an aggressive policy on this rapidly evolving technology that threatens to disrupt our labor force, our communities, education, and potentially threaten national security and human dignity,” Roe stated.
Barrett has responded to these concerns by introducing legislation that would prohibit AI from determining medical treatment and ensure human control over autonomous weapons. Moreover, he advocates for age-verification mechanisms for AI chatbots, particularly concerning minor users.
Despite their shared concerns, the candidates’ views diverge significantly on the role of federal oversight in local data center expansion. Barrett’s team has noted that he believes federal authorities should not intervene in local land use and zoning decisions, supporting legislation aimed at preventing such federal overreach.
