Detroit's Mayor Mike Duggan Evaluates Running Mate Candidates for Gubernatorial Race
As Detroit's Mayor Mike Duggan embarks on his independent journey towards the governor's office, he is in the process of assessing potential candidates for the lieutenant governor position. Despite being in this exploratory phase, Duggan has indicated that there is no rush to make a final decision.
In a recent discussion on the Michigan Public Television program “Off The Record,” Duggan shared his approach to selecting a running mate, stating, “I’m going to pick the most talented person, and at this point, I don’t have a particular candidate in mind, but I’m meeting people every day in different parts of the state.”
Duggan's independent candidacy has already been confirmed by the filing of his nominating petitions, marking a notable departure from his historical ties to the Democratic Party. He has expressed enthusiasm about the level of interest he is receiving from various individuals eager to be part of an independent ticket.
The deadline for Duggan to finalize and submit his running mate’s name is set for September, giving him a limited window to finalize his choice. He emphasized the attributes he deems essential for a candidate, stating, “Somebody who is honest, who is competent, who says what they mean, commands respect, has an accomplishment in life that people can say, yeah, we are going to end politics as usual.”
