Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan Searches for Gubernatorial Running Mate
As Detroit's Mayor Mike Duggan gears up for his independent run for governor, he is in the process of identifying potential candidates for the position of lieutenant governor. Although he is actively exploring options, he has indicated that there is no rush to finalize his selection.
In a recent discussion on the Michigan Public Television program “Off The Record,” Duggan commented, “I’m going to pick the most talented person, and at this point, I don’t have a particular candidate in mind, but I’m meeting people every day in different parts of the state.” This statement highlights his intention to thoroughly evaluate candidates as he travels across Michigan.
Duggan has completed the necessary steps to secure his position on the ballot as an independent candidate, diverging from his extensive history with the Democratic Party. His independent candidacy signifies a strategic shift in his political career.
The mayor has received considerable interest from several prominent individuals who are keen on being part of an independent ticket alongside him. However, he must make his final decision and submit his lieutenant governor nominee to the state by September.
Addressing the traits he values in a running mate, Duggan expressed a desire for “Somebody who is honest, who is competent, who says what they mean, commands respect, has an accomplishment in life that people can say, yeah, we are going to end politics as usual.”
