Educators in Arizona Advocate for Renewal of Public School Funding Initiative
As discussions at the Arizona state Capitol face gridlock, educators are ramping up their advocacy for increased funding in public education. The Arizona Education Association (AEA), led by President Marisol Garcia, is spearheading efforts to renew Proposition 123, a funding measure critical to supporting the state's public schools.
President Garcia underscored the immediate need for action, stating, “Put to the ballot a Proposition 123 renewal that would bring in over $250 million into our schools — new money.” She emphasized the significance of this funding as essential for addressing the diverse needs of local communities across Arizona.
Despite the push for renewal, the proposal's future is uncertain. Recent tensions have emerged as Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs accused Republican leaders of obstructing meaningful talks regarding school funding. This conflict has led Governor Hobbs to halt discussions over the budget with Republican lawmakers, highlighting the ongoing stalemate over how to adequately fund education in the state.
