Three-Month Strike of Nurses at Genesys Hospital Continues Amidst Impasse

As the strike involving over 700 nurses at Genesys Hospital, part of Henry Ford Health, reaches its three-month mark, negotiations show no signs of resolution. Originating on Labor Day, this strike has become a focal point of labor relations in the region, with nursing staff advocating for improvements primarily concerning nurse-to-patient ratios.

The situation escalated when Henry Ford Health announced an impasse in negotiations, opting to advance its latest contract proposal without union agreement. This action triggered the Teamsters union to file charges against the hospital, asserting unfair labor practices. Dan Glass, president of Teamsters Local 332, stated, “This employer has done absolutely everything to avoid reaching a contract and it can not continue.”

Even amid the ongoing strike, some union members have reportedly chosen to cross the picket line. In a statement, a representative from Henry Ford Genesys Hospital reiterated their commitment to engaging in good faith negotiations. “We remain as committed as ever to negotiating in good faith and reaching an agreement that supports and recognizes our nurses’ unique, professional expertise and provides the safe, high-quality comprehensive health care the people of Genesee County deserve,” the spokesperson noted.

Further negotiations between the involved parties are scheduled for December 9, as both sides continue to seek a pathway to resolution.
