Diplomatic Talks Address Immigration Raids Between U.S. and Mexico

A significant meeting occurred in Mexico City as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held talks with Christopher Landau, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State. This discussion was primarily centered on the topic of recent immigration raids in the United States, an issue that has sparked considerable public outcry.

President Sheinbaum voiced her concerns about these immigration actions, stating that they adversely affect honest and hardworking individuals. She remarked, “We told him we disagree with using raids to detain honest and hardworking people,” underscoring the detrimental implications these operations have not only on families but also on the perception of law enforcement.

The President went on to elaborate on the broader consequences of such raids, arguing that they can undermine the U.S. economy and disrupt communities. She specifically highlighted the need for the U.S. to honor due process rights for migrants, noting that many of those affected are citizens of Mexico.

In light of the heightened tensions and protests that have emerged, especially in cities like Los Angeles, Sheinbaum also appealed for a calm and constructive response from demonstrators, reflecting her push for peaceful resolutions to grievances stemming from the immigration policies.

Landau, who previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Mexico during the Trump administration, represented American interests in this dialogue, aiming to address and alleviate the concerns raised by the Mexican government.
