Detroit Representative Joe Tate Launches Senate Campaign
As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the race for an open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan is gaining traction with the entry of state representative Joe Tate, a prominent Detroit lawmaker. Tate officially announced his candidacy on Sunday, becoming the latest addition to a competitive Democratic field seeking to fill the position being vacated by retiring Senator Gary Peters.
Bringing a unique background to the race, Joe Tate has distinguished himself as a former Marine and NFL player. In a discussion with the Associated Press, he shared a personal narrative underscoring his motivations for running, which stem from his grandparents' migration from Alabama to Detroit during the Great Migration. “I’m running for the U.S. Senate, because I want to continue to keep that promise that my grandparents came up to Michigan for,” Tate stated.
Tate previously made history in 2022 as the first Black speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives. Under his leadership, the Democratic Party achieved a historic “trifecta” by gaining control over both legislative chambers and the governorship, allowing them to enact critical legislation on issues such as gun control, climate change, and reproductive rights. The Democrats also repealed the controversial “right to work” law.
Despite these successes, the Democratic Party faced challenges in the 2024 elections, where Republicans regained control of the state House. This shift led to internal discord, prompting Tate to prematurely end a legislative session, resulting in the halt of various bills concerning economic development and reproductive health data.
With Republicans now holding sway in the Legislature since January, many legislative issues remained unaddressed. Representatives from both parties have critiqued Tate for the abrupt conclusion of the session, with the new Republican speaker expressing disappointment, stating, “It’s just unfortunate that some people decided to stop coming to work when the job wasn’t done.”
In response, Tate remains optimistic about the Democratic accomplishments during his leadership, pointing to significant legislation on universal background checks and free school meals. “I see kids with full bellies in schools because of what we did,” he remarked, illustrating his commitment to the issues important to his constituents.
Tate's Senate campaign will face competition from several notable figures, including U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/mallory-mcmorrow-2026-election-michigan-senate-1e5f694a199
