Increased Demand at Food Pantries During Government Shutdown

The ongoing federal government shutdown has led to a significant rise in demand for food assistance in communities like Flagstaff, where delays in federal food aid are being keenly felt. Local food pantries are bracing for sustained increases in the number of families seeking support as the shutdown continues.

At the Flagstaff Family Food Center’s distribution site, a growing line of vehicles is a common sight, as staff and volunteers work diligently to provide essential groceries. The center reports a remarkable 30% increase in demand for food supplies, suggesting that this trend may persist as the shutdown drags on.

Distribution Manager Chris Smiley remarked on the unprecedented demand, noting, “We’re expecting the need to just keep going up and up and up. On Tuesday, we broke our record for families served at our distributions. And then Wednesday, we broke the Tuesday record. And then on Thursday, we almost matched it.”

Ceara Chirovsky, the center's Vice President, assured the community that assistance is available, stating, “The food is here. You do not have to go hungry, you can come to us and we will give you food to put on the table for yourself and your family and it is high quality and it is nutritious.”

This increase in demand at local food pantries comes amid concerns regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Despite a federal judge's order ensuring funding for food assistance, worries remain about potential delays in reloading SNAP cards, which could extend for weeks, thereby affecting many families who rely on this support.
